SNOW HILL – (August 19, 2009) Under the direction of Helen Waters, Instructor/Choir Director, and Drenda Turner, Activities Coordinator, 26 choir members from the Worcester County Developmental Center, Inc. (WCDC) sang their hearts out to the seniors at the Charles & Martha Fulton Senior Center in Snow Hill. The singing program included twelve songs such as “This Little Light of Mine,” “You are My Sunshine,” and “The Whole World.”  Many senior citizens were seen smiling, nodding their heads, and at times clapping their hands. At the end of the program there was time for fellowship with watermelon served by the Senior Center staff as a refreshing snack which was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

After the Fire! - Update

Even before the devastating fire, WCDC’s ability to adequately meet the needs of its clients and their families was compromised because of space limitations and pressing demands for increased services. WCDC currently serves 85 individuals in our Day Program and has a staff of 60 employees.  According to information provided by the Developmental Disabilities Administration, Eastern Shore Regional Office, there are 7,678 people waiting for day services statewide, and 73 on the waiting list in Worcester County.

Prior to the fire, WCDC’s long-term goal was to build a new facility for its day program and administrative offices. Obviously the need to move forward with these plans has become much more urgent.

Director’s Note

9/07/07

Tuesday, September 4th marked another beginning for Worcester County Developmental Center, Inc. The devastating fire that destroyed the building on Newark Road has forced the Day Program to shut down temporarily, but we anticipate that it will be for a short while. When we reopen, it will be in an alternate location, allowing the site in Newark to be devoted entirely to the construction of a new, state-of-the-art Day Program facility.

The Residential, Supported Employment and Support Services Programs have continued without interruption. Day Program staff members are working in the Residential homes. Administrative staff is using the job club and the finance trailer. You may reach us at 410-632-2382.

We have located a warehouse-type building in Snow Hill that is available for us to rent. Per State of Maryland regulations, there are adjustments and additions necessary before we can make a Day Program facility out of it. These renovations take time, but will be accomplished as soon as possible, and our Day Program will reopen at 310 E. Market Street in Snow Hill.

We remain committed to empowering developmentally challenged adults in making individual choices in how they live and work in Worcester, Wicomico, and Somerset Counties. Weekly enrichment activities are being planned for participants in the Day Program.

The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore has made a very generous offer to help us out financially. They have set aside $10,000 to be used as a match for any donations made to WCDC. In order to have your donation matched, make the check out to “Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore” and mark it “WCDC Emergency Fund.” Mail donations to the following address:
